1. General and specific objectives of the course
To assist students in acquiring knowledge about the history of the European Union. To draw their attention to important interrelations in the history of Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries.
2. Contents of the course
The politics of cooperation that so significantly influenced the history of European nations started at the Conference of Vienna in the early 19th century. It was a conservative alliance, with the participartion of Russia, an autochratic oriental power, in addition to the representatives of the highly developed western world, including England. After WW I it was, interestingly, the USA that initiated the creation of a cooperation organization of the European states. The first idea of a European Union, however, emerged in the Briand Plan. WW II tore Europe into two halves. In the western half the 1st Hague Conference discussed the issue of a European Parliament. Western European cooperation took a tangible political form in the Council of Europe. Cooperation was further reinforced with the economic integration, which received a great impetus from MONTANUNION. A natural continuation of these efforts was the military integration, the creation, then transformation, of the European Defense Community.
